12-year-old charged with murder

A 12-year-old southeast Iowa boy faces murder charges, after authorities say he shot and killed his stepfather and injured a 5-year-old child.

The shootings happened Wednesday evening at a home on 475th in Chariton, Iowa.

12-year-old Jacen Paul Pearson is charged with one count of first degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of willful injury.

Authorities allege that Pearson shot and killed his stepfather, 37-year-old Tod Peek and injured a five-year-old girl, Cheyanne Peek.

Cheyanne Peek was taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Witnesses reported Pearson left the home after the shooting, before police arrived.

Authorities found him about a half a mile from the residence and took him into custody.
