2,000 trout find a new home in Ottumwa

Ottumwa has some new residents. Over 2,000 rainbow trout were released Saturday morning. There were around 200 fishermen that took advantage of the release. Everyone very eager to get the season started.

"All the fishermen are lined up and ready to catch some big ones. We've got a guy that caught a seven and a half pounder last year. Some of the trout are going to be tagged, approximately two-hundred. If any of the fishermen catch a tagged fish, they come up here to the command control center and they can redeem their tag for a prize. The grand prize is a trophy and a rod and reel combo. It's a great day for outdoor recreation and a great day to start up the fishing season," said Gene Rathje.

Rathje also wants to remind everyone to pick up a current fishing license so you don't miss out on any of the fun.
