At 8:00 Monday morning, Heartland residents gathered at the NEMO Fair Grounds for the opening ceremony for this yearâ??s fair. Despite the drizzle and the early morning hour, dozens of people attended the ceremony, which began with the presenting of colors by veterans. The reigning NEMO Fair Pageant winners also assisted in the ceremony.
2013 NEMO Fair Queen Shelby Dolan said she was happy to win. â??It was so exciting, because Iâ??ve been in the pageant before and I didn't do so great then; so when I had my speech down and I did the walk the way I wanted to, I was just so excited,â?? Dolan said. â??I was thinking man I must have really killed it out there.â??
The 19-year-old said she is looking forward to her duties as queen during the week, especially attending the livestock shows. Six beautiful young women were in the running to become the next 2013 NEMO Fair Teen Miss. After interviewing with judges, displaying her talent of playing the xylophone and wearing her evening gown, 15-year-old Natalie Ayers won Teen Miss. She said the best part of the pageant was wearing the evening gown. â??It was very exciting being the first time I was in this pageant and I was really, really happy,â?? Ayers.
Ayers said she is looking forward to the livestock shows and exhibitors.
Emma Ledford, 11, was crowned Young Miss in Sundayâ??s festivities. Ledford, whose special talent was singing, said she did not expect to win, but so far it has been really exciting. â??It's going to be exciting getting to go to the concerts and meeting a lot of new people,â?? Ledford said.
Ledford said the best part of the fair was getting to perform her talent on the stage.
