A local woman's body is recovered from Rathbun Lake

Just before 1 Sunday morning, emergency personnel responded to the Rathbun Marina boat docks on a report of a female that fell into Rathbun Lake.

When Appanoose County Sheriffâ??s deputies arrived at the Rathbun Marina, they learned that Kathy Sue Lukehart, 43, of Ottumwa, was on her boat that that was docked at the Rathbun Marina. Lukehart had gotten off her boat and was standing on the dock, adjusting her clothing when she lost her balance and fell in to Rathbun Lake.

Lukehart never surfaced and witnesses immediately called 911.

Emergency personnel from the Appanoose County Sheriffâ??s Office, Appanoose County Water Rescue, Iowa State Patrol, Mercy Ambulance, Mystic, Moravia and Centerville Fire and Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene and began rescue operations.

Just before 2 a.m., Lukehart was found under the water surface near the location where she fell in.

Lukehart was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville where she was pronounced dead.

Lukehartâ??s body was taken to the Iowa State Medical Examinerâ??s Office where an autopsy will be conducted.
