The Bear Creek Church is the oldest standing church in Adair County and with its current condition community members are afraid this may no longer be the case.
â??I could see so many things that needed to be fixed on it and I was just beside myself to see it in such rundown conditions that I wanted to do something that could help,â?? said Mike Bowers.
Former caretaker, Roy Payton, selected Mihalevich to watch over the church in 1976, however she says it's a bit difficult without much help.
â??It's always been in my mind but I wasn't able to do it and I didn't have any idea how to do it because I personally can't do it and I was too old to do it,â?? said Mihalevich.
The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 but there's been no funding provided to return the site to its original condition.
â??Iâ??d like the community as a whole to take some interest in Bear Creek Church. Itâ??s really easy to find. You just go out Route B, three miles exactly and the Baptist Church is on the right hand side,â?? said Bowers.
Caretakers are encouraging citizens and businesses to donate materials for the restoration of our county's foundation.
â??We have a building fund set up for Bear Creek Church at US Bank and whatever donations are received will receive a receipt for what they paid and I have said that if we don't get this off the ground, all money will be refunded to everybody who wants it,â?? said Mihalevich.
