A few Heartland kids are hooked on fishing after participating in the 31st annual Jim Baker - John McConnell Bass and Kids Fishing Tournament.
Dozens of young fishers were up bright and early Saturday morning testing the waters at Forest Lake in Thousand Hills State Park.
The goal of the tournament: teaching kids how to fish right and have fun doing it.
â??You know if we have 10 kids it's well worth the effort because each one, and talking to some of them before they went out and fished, a lot of the kids have never fished before, had no idea what to do. So that's why we started this 31 years ago, and will have 100 kids before it's all said and done so mission accomplished,â?? said organizer John McConnell.
One of the biggest catches of the day was a whopping 18.7 inch bass!
Not everyone got quite that lucky, but whether they caught 10 fish, or two, each participant walked away with a door prize and some new skills.
Organizers are already looking ahead to the 32nd annual tournament next year which will be held the weekend after Truman State University's commencement.
