Suspect in deadly shooting: 'I shot my friend 10 times'

FURTHER UPDATE 3/29 : KTVO has now learned the name of the victim of Tuesday night's deadly shooting in Kirksville.

Adair County Coroner Brian Noe told us the man killed in the incident was Steven D. Filczer, 62, of Kirksville.

Police say Joshua Atkins, 31, of Kirksville was arrested Tuesday night at the scene, a home in the 800 block of East Jefferson Street.

On Wednesday afternoon, Adair County Prosecutor Matt Wilson filed charges against Atkins.

The suspect is now charged with First-Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

He is being held in the Adair County jail on $1 million cash-only bond.

Court documents state that Atkins called 911 and told the dispatcher that during an argument, he "shot his friend 10 times."

Noe told KTVO there were multiple handguns and long rifles at the home where the shooting happened.

An autopsy on Filczer's body is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Until the autopsy is completed, investigators won't know for sure which one of the weapons was used in the deadly shooting.

Court documents state that Atkins told Kirksville police detectives he fired at Filczer "until the gun was empty."

He also told police he continued to fire as Filczer fell to the floor, including one shot to the head.

According to court papers, Atkins said he wanted to make sure Filczer couldn't shoot him.

The suspect claims that earlier in the day Filczer had fired three shots at Atkins while he sat on the couch inside the residence.

3/29 UPDATE: Formal charges have now been filed against the suspect in Tuesday night's fatal shooting.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, Atkins is now charged with First-Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

He is being held in the Adair County Law Enforcement Center on $1 million cash-only bond.

The victim's name will be released after the family has been notified.

Adair County Coroner Brian Noe told KTVO Wednesday afternoon that he is having trouble contacting the victim's next of kin.

Noe said the preliminary cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Noe told KTVO there were multiple handguns and long rifles at the home where the shooting happened.

Until the autopsy is completed, investigators won't know which one of the weapons was used in the deadly shooting.

Police are asking that anyone with information related to the ongoing investigation contact law enforcement.

UPDATE: Kirksville Deputy Police Chief Steve Farnsworth updated KTVO on the situation at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

He confirmed that one male is dead inside a home at 809 East Jefferson Street in Kirksville.

Investigators have not yet positively identified the victim. Even when they do, the victim's name will be withheld until his family is notified.

Detectives are talking to one person of interest as well as other witnesses who were present when the shooting happened.

No arrest had been made as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Farnsworth told KTVO police are not searching for any suspect.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Adair County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation.

Kirksville police are investigating an apparent fatal shooting at a residence on Jefferson Street.

It happened at 809 East Jefferson Street at approximately 9:35 p.m. Tuesday.

A man reportedly called 911 from that address, saying he had gotten into an argument with his friend and shot him.

Adair County Coroner Brian Noe confirmed for KTVO that he had been called to the scene of the shooting.

He was still at the residence as of 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Kirksville police officers have been too busy to provide details about the shooting.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is also at the scene helping with the investigation.
