Avoid car thefts this holiday season

Fairfield police are investigating a rash of car break-ins this month.

Wapello County Deputy Sheriff Don Phillips offers safety tips to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime this holiday season.

â??(If) your car gets broken into, or you are a victim of a robbery, contact law enforcement immediately,â?? Phillips said. â??Try to get as much description as you're able to. I'd encourage you not to resist and you know, give whatever they're asking for to eliminate any injury to you.â??

He says to park in well-lit areas. Make sure your shopping bags are out of sight in your car; put valuable items in the trunk; always lock your doors, and be mindful of your surroundings.
