Local students are heading back to school next week and law enforcement is encouraging drivers to exercise extreme caution.
Officer Rich Harden of the Kirksville Police Department says drivers should be extra careful between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.
During those hours, most students are on the way to school.
They then leave campus between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The speed limit throughout the school zone is 20 miles per hour.
Harden also warns drivers to look out for school bus stop arms when traveling during school hours.
â??Definitely pay really close attention when the busses are stopped, when the stop arms are out... when their flash lights are flashing you have to stop. You can't go around them. Just stop and wait. Itâ??s going to take a minute. Theyâ??ll have the kids loaded up and they'll be on their way,â?? said Harden.
Harden warns new high school drivers to pay close attention to the roadways and look out for peers while driving to school.
He says to avoid texting and other phone use while operating a vehicle.
