      Back-to-School Safety Tips

Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the school bus, it is extremely important that they take proper safety precautions. Kirksville Police Chief, Jim Hughes, and Kirksville Resource Officer, Rich Harden, stopped by the set of Good Morning Heartland to give us some safety tips to keep in mind. WATCH VIDEO ABOVE to learn more.

Kirksville Police Department School Resource/Master Police Officer Richard Harden recently attended training in which he was certified in ALICE.?? The ALICE program is changing how schools, universities, places of worship, hospitals, and businesses respond to armed intruders.?? ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) is a set of proactive strategies that increase chances of survival during an armed intruder event.?? While no one can guarantee zero casualties or injuries, ALICE will empower people with options of survival.??

School Resource Officer Rich Harden??s recent certification in ALICE, allows him the ability to teach the ALICE program to others.??

The ALICE program was created out of a husband??s desire for his wife to have a better plan in case of an active shooter event.?? After the Columbine High School shooting, Greg Crane was a law enforcement officer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and his wife, Lisa, was an elementary school principal.?? While both prepared in their professional lives for this type of tragic event, it was not until a fateful conversation around the dinner table that brought the two worlds together and created the ALICE Program.??

The ALICE program is adopted by more than 900 organizations, representing more than one million people across the U.S.??

If your agency, organization or group would like to learn more about the ALICE program or be trained in ALICE, please contact SRO Rich Harden or Deputy Chief Steve Farnsworth with the Kirksville Police Department at 660-785-6945.
