Backpack giveaway Saturday

Not only is it a state tax holiday this weekend, but the First Pentecostal Church in Ottumwa is helping families get ready for back to school with their third annual backpack giveaway.

At last yearâ??s giveaway, more than 400 backpacks were given away.

Through donations, the church was able to purchase 550 backpacks all filled with basic school supplies.

The carnival-life event gives both kids and parents something to smile about.

â??It is an excellent way to meet a physical need plus tell about God's love and also to just provide the backpacks and the school supplies does help people economically. It's kind of hard time for a lot of families and it just gives them an extra boost and the help that they need at the school time when there's so much to buy for children,â?? said Lisa Mullikin, First Pentecostal Church Childrenâ??s Pastor.

The backpack giveaway runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

There will be carnival games and activities for the kids and the actual backpack giveaway will be around 11:45.
