Beloved teacher loses battle against bone cancer

Students, staff and the community are devastated by the death of a popular northeast Missouri teacher.

Schuyler County High School teacher Cindy Cottrell, 61, lost her battle with bone cancer Monday at her home outside Memphis, Missouri.

Counselors from area schools were on hand Tuesday in Queen City to help students and staff cope with the tragic loss.

Principal Kyle Windy said in a statement that the school's thoughts and prayers are with Cottrell's family.

Before coming to Schuyler County High School, Cottrell taught at Wyaconda High School.

Before that, she was a teacher at Harmony High School in southeast Iowa.

Two funeral services will be held for Cindy Cottrell, one at her church in Memphis, the other at her school in Queen City.

The first funeral is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Memphis.

The second is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Schuyler County High School in Queen City.

The services are under the direction of Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster.
