Birth control options can be very confusing and there are so many different options, where do women even start?
This is a topic that should be discussed with a health care provider. There are risks associated with hormone use such as heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots especially in women over 35 who smoke. If a woman has Migraine headaches with aura she would need guidance to carefully choose a method safe for her. A woman who has had breast cancer may need a hormone free method.
There are more reasons to use birth control than just to prevent pregnancy such as heavy, painful periods, irregular or absent periods, PMS, and perimenopause. (Just to name a few!!)
After counseling women on the risks and benefits and taking into account their personal risk factors, a provider can help a woman navigate through all the choices.
