A water main break has occured one mile south of Ottumwa, resulting in a water boil advisory being issued for River Road, Miller Chapel Road, 60th Street and the surrounding area.
The break occured on River Road and 60th Street. The broken water main has been replaced and repaired. However, due to the loss of water pressure while the main was broken, the potential exists for bacterial contamination. It is being recommended that the water be boiled before drinking or cooking or that an alternative source such as bottled water be used. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.
General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
