If you want to see some creativity and help a good cause at the same time, the third annual Bras for a Cause event will be held Saturday, March 30 at the Carl Craft Civic Center in Hedrick, Iowa.
Last year, around 80 bras were decked out, modeled and auctioned off, with all the proceeds supporting the Southeast Iowa branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. So far this year, event creator and organizer Laurie Hornback has around 30 bras that have been donated already, but there will likely be more to come.
"There is a lot of effort put into it and when you make it fun, then people get more involved," Hornback, also a breast cancer survivor, said. "It seems like it spreads year to year that people pull together and everybody wants to decorate a bra and a lot of people want to model the bras, which our volunteer firemen model for us.We've talked about moving it to a larger community, but I think because we started it in Hedrick and I'm from Hedrick and I'm a survivor and I know other breast cancer survivors from that area, it's just a family-type event."
Bras for a Cause will start with a soup supper at 4:30 p.m., a silent auction will run throughout the night and a live auction of the decorated bras will begin at 6 p.m.
All the food and arrangements thus far have been donated, which proves the dedication and compassion of the community.
