Build with Bags program promotes recycling in Iowa
Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Build with Bags program.
The program awards grants that allow for and promote the recycling of plastic bags. Over $150,000 has been given to schools and parks across Iowa over the last four years.
Bloomfield Main Street received $2,000 last year for new benches.
The program has several goals, but the biggest and most important is keeping plastic bags out of landfills.
"We're trying to help people recycle the plastic bags, it's one thing you cannot put in your curbside cart," said Brian Burnam, Chairman of the Board of Directors. "So all the retailers in Iowa decided we'd start collecting them back so that we wouldn't have to worry about fees or bag ban or anything like that."
The deadline to apply for the grant is March 30 and recipients will be announced in May.
