Burlington man led officers on a New Year's chase, deputies say
BURLINGTON, Iowa —
A Burlington, Iowa, man led Des Moines County Sheriff's deputies on a chase on New Year’s Eve.
Deputy Dave Murguia said in a press release Monday morning that around 10 Sunday night, deputies were called to a report of a hit-and-run with an injury at the Echo Valley Two Trailer Court in West Burlington.
As officers headed that way, they were told the driver, 21-year-old Matthew Ell, was traveling north on Beaverdale Road.
Witnesses told authorities Ell assaulted his girlfriend and intentionally hit her car with his vehicle on his way out.
Ell was later seen traveling east on Flint Bottom Road, northwest of Burlington. When deputies tried to pull him over, Ell drove away.
Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol, Burlington police officers and deputies eventually caught up with Ell at a residence on North 7th Street in Burlington, and he was taken into custody.
Ell was charged with Felony Eluding, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Operating while Intoxicated, Failure to Yield to a Stop Sign, No Proof of Insurance, Failure to Maintain Control, Speeding and Domestic Assault, Causing Injury.
As of late Monday morning, Ell was still in custody at the Des Moines County Jail.
