Buy a purse, help local animals
What do purses and dogs have in common?
From now until May 10, you can bid on a gently used purse and all of the proceeds help benefit local animals and HOGS4DOGSUSA.
The fundraiser is called Purses for Pooches, and over the last couple of weeks, community members have dropped of their gently used purses to Anjila's Mane Design on Church Street in Ottumwa. Coach, Prada, Dooney and Burke are just some of the designers up for auction.
It's a first-of-its-kind fundraiser for HOGS4DOGSUSA, and it benefits everyone involved, including those who donated a purse.
"For every purse they donate, they get to put their name in a drawing," said Tammie Hartley, founder of HOGS4DOGSUSA. "And then the purses are up for bid and the highest bidder wins the purse. Any purse that is not bid on gets donated to the women's shelter."
The drawing that donators could enter has a grand prize of a cookie bouquet from the Little Bake Shop, a flower arrangement from Ed the Florist, a pearl necklace from Rainy's, dinner for two at Roe's Restaurant, a pedicure from N2 Nails and a massage from Time Away.
Some women donated multiple purses, and as the collection grew, it's been fun for Anjila and her customers to seek out which purses they liked best.
"We've had a great response, people are having what we call "cat fights" over them, they look in and they see somebody's bid $26, so they bid $27 and they're all in good fun," said Anjila Collins. "Everybody is loving it, they think it's a great cause, we're having a great turnout, it's been wonderful."
Bidding on the purses opens on Tuesday, April 2 and the winners of the purses and the grand prize drawing will be announced on May 10.
Anjila's Mane Design is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to bid, or you can call the store at 683-7655 with any questions.
