Car crash leaves Ottumwa man trapped inside his vehicle for nearly two days

UPDATE: A spokesman for Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines told KTVO Monday evening that Patrick Douglas, 60, of Ottumwa is listed in critical condition.


Over the weekend , a car crash left an Ottumwa man pinned inside his vehicle for almost 48 hours.

Just after 1 Sunday afternoon, the Wapello County Sheriff's Office received a call of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 63 south of Eddyville.

When deputies arrived, they found a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina located between two bridges near a creek. They found driver, Patrick Allen Douglas, 60, of Ottumwa, pinned inside the car, but he was conscious and alert.

Douglas told authorities he had fallen asleep behind the wheel around 5 or 6 Friday evening when he drove off the road. He mentioned to authorities that he had to result to desperation tactics while trapped.

"It rained Saturday night and he had used his hand to catch some of the rain so he could get something to drink while he was pinned in the car,"said Wapello County Sheriff's Deputy Don Phillips.

It took nearly one and a half hours for Wapello Rural Fire and Eddyville Fire units to successfully pry Douglas from his vehcile using JAWS.

Douglas was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Charges are currently pending.
