In Kirksville, a local church opened their doors for a community Christmas dinner on Sunday.

The event was held at First United Methodist Church free of charge to Heartland residents.

Volunteers started preparing Christmas dinner at 10:00 a.m Sunday morning for over 150 people.

For 16-year-old committee member Skylar Petersen, she says volunteering at the community dinner has become a tradition in her family.

She says it's amazing how many people donate their food and time to be apart of such a heartwarming event.

"I think it really brings out the true meaning of Christmas and helping one another," said Petersen.

"I think it's an excellent way to just give back to the community. I think it's something that you sometimes forget how many people that are in the community that need someplace to go on Christmas," said committee member Noah Krueger.
