Authorities have released the name of a Truman State University student who drowned in a private pond in Adair County Friday night.
The Missouri State Water Patrol says 19-year-old Curtis Rhodes of St. Louis, Mo., drowned after jumping off a dock into the pond just before 8:30 p.m. Friday. The pond was on the Foley residence at 25815 State Highway P.
Those at the scene told KTVO the group Campus Crusade for Christ from Truman was having a party celebrating the end of the school year.
The water patrol says Rhodes jumped into the pond feet first and did not resurface. The Water Patrol reports the pond was about 15 feet deep; Rhodes was not a swimmer and wasn't wearing a flotation device.
The Kirksville Fire Department recovered Rhodes TM body near the dock about 40 minutes after he went into the water. He was taken to Northeast Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Adair County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. Adair County Coroner Brian Noe tells KTVO an autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Boone County. Funeral arrangements have not yet been set, but Noe says services will be held in the St. Louis area.
Rhodes was a computer science major at Truman. University officials are organizing a memorial service that will be held next week.
