Community celebrates life of late mayor, charitable fundraiser goes on
Family and friends of the late mayor of Centerville gathered at the Manhattan Steakhouse for a fundraiser and celebration of his life.
James Senior, better known simply as Jim, passed away at the age of 70 on Aug. 1. The event's coordinator had intended for tonight's fundraiser to include the mayor and his family, but decided it must continue without him after his passing. An estimated 200 to 300 people came out for the event, which included dinner, free-will donations and a raffle. The proceeds will go to community projects and charities close to the late mayor's heart that will be selected by his family.
â??Jim has been a very good family friend for a long time, and when I created this idea, he was still with us, and I wanted hopefully for him to hopefully share this, so when we lost him, you know, we kind of had to think about things, but now we're doing a celebration of his life to kind of give the family an idea of how much the community cared about him,â?? organizer Ami Hamilton said.
Those unable to attend the event on Saturday may leave contributions at Iowa Trust and Savings bank for the â??Jim Senior memorial fund."
