Nearly 147 million orphans worldwide are waiting to be adopted. One Heartland family is getting the support they need to bring one of the children home.
Dane and Misty Anderson of La Plata are in the process of adopting a little girl named Debbie from eastern Europe. The child has cerebral palsy.
There was an adoption fundraiser held Saturday for Debbie at the NEMO Fairgrounds in Kirksville. The activities planned were a rummage sale, silent auction, breakfast and lunch. The effort was held in hopes of getting Debbie to a safe home in the U.S.
"I think often especially Eastern European countries children with special needs are overlooked there as the lowest class of people and often not cared for very well at all. So we feel like that's a necessary thing for us to do," said mother Misty Anderson.
The couple currently has 11 children including two young girls they adopted last year. Both of those girls have special needs also. The Andersons would like to thank the community for all the support. They plan to travel to Europe in November and hope to have Debbie home in time for Christmas.
