Davis County Sheriff: Out-of-county inmates 'just a bonus'
BLOOMFIELD, Iowa —
Almost a year has passed since Davis County opened its new jail.
Unlike Davis County, voters in Appanoose County have rejected two jail bond issues in recent years.
Appanoose County Supervisor Mark Waits said the county has considered trying again this year.
Davis County Sheriff Dave Davis told KTVO his jail would survive with or without inmates from Appanoose County.
“We benefit from Appanoose County bringing inmates over and we receive money from Appanoose County, but we never built the new facility with that in mind, that we were going to get to house out-of-county inmates,” Davis said. “That's just a bonus.”
Waits estimated Appanoose County will spend up to $500,000 this year on securing out-of-county housing for inmates.
