The Oskaloosa community is in shock after hearing about Thursday night's fatal stabbing.

Police officers received a report of a fight at the intersection of North Third Street and H Avenue that escalated quickly.

Investigators say 22-year-old Marquis Todd, a William Penn University student from Woodridge, Illinois, died at the hospital shortly after he was stabbed.

"Obviously it's a shock, not only to us, but our citizens as well, but again, we just want to emphasize that this is an isolated incident and we feel there is no danger to anyone else," said Oskaloosa Police Chief Jake McGee.

McGee said the fight broke out around 11 Thursday night, after a minor car crash near the crime scene.

"The accident happened probably within a half hour of the time that we originally got our call," McGee said.

Police officers found Todd at the Jiffy Mart on A Avenue East. From there, Todd was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Store Manager Rhonda Hockey said employees working at the Jiffy Mart Thursday night are still pretty shaken up about what happened.

"The police were here all evening, doing their investigation and so everyone was fine," Hockey said. "There's support from the customers, phone calls, ex-employees and the church across the street, and so everybody's doing fine."

Special Agent Mike Motsinger with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said no arrests have been made yet. He said investigators are still gathering information and conducting interviews.

Investigators still have the scene tapped off.

Neighbors told KTVO they don't know much about the people who were living there.

A man one door down said he arrived home late last night, but didn't hear about the commotion until early Friday morning.

McGee said Todd played on the basketball team at William Penn, and his peers and teammates are coping as best they can.

He added that counseling is available to students if they need it.
