Do the Amish pay property taxes?
Our Fact Finder Team did the research, and found that the Amish do pay property taxes on everything from real estate and livestock to machinery and buggies in both Missouri and Iowa. That TMs according to W.B. Tichenor, Senior Officer from the Missouri State Tax Commission, and Roger Sterler with the Iowa Department of Revenue. There are no statutes in either state that exempt the Amish from paying taxes. The only possible exemption would be to churches and school buildings. The Amish are required to pay sales tax to the government on items sold in their businesses. Amish business owners must follow city codes and have a business license. They can get an exemption from the state on insurance requirements, like workman's comp. The Amish do not pay into or receive benefits from social security.
