Dogs make a final splash for the summer at The Beach Ottumwa

Labor Day dog paddle at The Beach Ottumwa

Dozens of dogs and their owners headed out to The Beach Ottumwa for an end of summer swim on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

One bag of dog or cat food got you and your pup in the door, and all donations go directly to the Heartland Humane Society. Many dogs were excited to plunge into the wave pool, while others were more reluctant, but their owners are thrilled to let their pets make a splash for charity every year on Labor Day.

â??It's kind of the way we close the summer here at the Beach,â?? Meg Hutchison, Heartland Humane board member, said. â??You know, they have been wonderful to us, to Heartland Humane Society to be a part of this last day to use the pool, and the dogs just love it, and every year, it has increased.â??

Organizers estimated that over 100 dogs made a splash at the Beach by the end of the evening. Heartland Humane has been in operation for almost 20 years now, and they rely on donations for their operations.
