Members from the community gathered at Bladensburg Christian Church on Saturday for an ice cream social with the profits going towards the Wapello County Foster Grandparents Program and for a local girl.
The Foster Grandparents Program is federally funded and is sponsored by the American Home Finding Association.
The program places limited income senior citizens in schools, daycares and faith-based agencies to help children who are at risk of falling behind in reading and math.
Not only does this help the children but it also helps the foster grandparents.
â??Some of them, you know, don't have other family so this is good for them. This gets them up and out of the house and they're not worrying about their aches and pains. It keeps them from isolating themselves as seniors which is something that often happens when people become aged so itâ??s a good program. Itâ??s a win-win for everybody involved,â?? said Deb Adam, Program Director of the Foster Grandparents Program.
Currently there are 39 foster grandparents in the program.
