Economic group announces $7 million project in Macon County

Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores plans to build a travel center on U.S. Highway 36 west of Macon.

A project that's expected to have a "tremendous economic impact" was announced by Macon County Economic Development.

Executive Director Denise Bennett tells KTVO that Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores plans to build a travel center on U.S. Highway 36 west of Macon. Bennett says Love's is making a $7 million investment in the project, not including the land acquisition.

The new travel center will be constructed on the northeast corner of the Bevier intersection at Highway 36 and Route O. Construction is set to start in May or June 2014 with a December 2014 completion date. Bennett said local contractors will be used for portions of the construction.

Bennett said, "This is very good for the local economy." She said the travel center is expected to create 25-40 new jobs and the site will be annexed into Bevier.

Plans call for the center to offer specific amenities, including a retail store, to over-the-road truck drivers. The center will also cater to local and passenger vehicles. It will include a restaurant, but the details of the restaurant have not yet been released.

Bennett says she is very excited about the project and says she has been working with Love's for five years to bring the travel center to Macon County.
