Eldon Public Library celebrates 100 years

People gather to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Eldon Carnegie Public Library.

Saturday marked the Eldon Carnegie Public Library's 100th anniversary.

Friends of the Eldon Library enjoyed refreshments and desserts as they reflected on the buildingâ??s rich history.

Shana Stuart, Director, Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project, spoke of the Eldon Libraryâ??s significance. Andrew Carnegie gave funding to 1,689 libraries in the United States and 830 libraries to countries across the globe. Suzanne Streeby. Library Director, explained the importance of the momentous occasion.

â??Thereâ??s a lot of Carnegie Libraries that are no longer in use,â?? Streeby said. "People have moved on to bigger libraries, so actually still standing, in good condition and being used is a real milestone.â??

Andrew Carnegie gave over $41 million to libraries in the U.S. The 7th library he opened in the states was in Fairfield, Iowa.
