Elementary students learn about DARE
If you were a child of the 80's and years after, you know about the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or DARE.
Tuesday students in Brashear listened to Officer Rich Harden as he taught the students the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs and alcohol.
Officer Harden gave students tips on how to resist peer pressure and the hard facts about alcohol and tobacco.
â??We're starting the DARE program here at Brashear,â?? Harden said. â??Itâ??s an eight week program. Itâ??s put on by the Kirksville Police Department, the Adair County Sheriffs Department and cooperation with the Brashear School District. Talking to the kids is probably the most favorite part of my job.â??
According to dare.com prior to entering the DARE program, officers undergo 80 hours of special training in areas such as child development, classroom management, teaching techniques, and communication skills.
