Elliott Pharmacy to merge with Hy-Vee

Officials with Hy-Vee, Inc. Monday announced plans for Elliott Pharmacy in Kirksville to merge with the Kirksville Hy-Vee store.

Hy-Vee has reached an agreement with Elliott Pharmacy owners Alice Allinson and Jeff Nelson to purchase the business and merge its pharmacy operations with the pharmacy at the Kirksville Hy-Vee. Hy-Vee is seeking approval from the city of Kirksville for a remodeling project that will enlarge the pharmacy space at its store so the merger can take place in late February or early March.

While Nelson plans to retire from the business, Allinson will continue working as a pharmacist at Hy-Vee, and Hy-Vee will offer positions to the other Elliott Pharmacy employees as well. In a statement, Nelson and Allinson thanked customers for their support.

â??We appreciate the patronage and loyalty the community has given to us over the last 40 years,â?? the statement said. â??We are excited about the new opportunities presented by this merger, and we are confident our customers will continue receiving the same excellent pharmaceutical services at Hy-Vee.â??

Kirksville Hy-Vee store Director Jeff Suchomel said he is looking forward to having the Elliott Pharmacy team join the Hy-Vee family.

â??Jeff and Alice and their employees have carried on a proud tradition of providing outstanding service to the community,â?? Suchomel said. â??We are pleased and honored that they trust Hy-Vee to continue taking care of their customersâ?? pharmacy needs.â??

Elliott Pharmacy opened in Kirksville in 1973. Allinsonâ??s father, Paul Elliott, came to Kirksville in 1971 to work as a pharmacist at Gibson Pharmacy. Two years later, he bought the business and renamed it Elliott Pharmacy.

Allinson said she started working at the store when she 14. She left to pursue pharmacy studies, but returned 21 years ago to join her father as a pharmacist in his store. In 1996, Allinson and Nelson, another Elliott pharmacist, became co-owners of the store in partnership with Paul Elliott. After Paul Elliott died in 2003, Allinson and Nelson purchased his share of the business and became equal partners in the ownership and operation of the store.

Elliott Pharmacy will continue operating in its current location at 2120 North Baltimore until the Hy-Vee remodeling project is complete.
