Fairfield getting new Walmart

FAIRFIELD,IOWA-- Some southeast residents are getting a huge new place to shop in the near future.

The city of Fairfield has approved plans for a new Walmart super center. The new store will be double the size of the current Walmart. And unlike the existing store, the new one plans on adding groceries along with traditional retail.

The location of the store will be on west Burlington Avenue; across from the Jefferson county fairgrounds. The new supercenter will also consume less energy and be green friendly.

Fairfield mayor Ed Malloy says the new Walmart is a major step forward for the city.

"They will also provide the second grocery outlet in Fairfield. At the current time we have just one. We're excited about the developments of both projects. The Hy-vee project and the Walmart project in Fairfield. So those will both be newly designed stores."

Construction should begin in the spring and the grand opening is expected by next thanksgiving.

"Walmart has been a part of Fairfield for two decades now and they are a large employer locally. So I think that it is important to Fairfield. I think that Walmart will continue to serve us well as a community."
