Fire at tower site leaves KTUF off the air

Smoke was billowing from the metal building that houses the transmitter for KTUF radio in Kirksville.

It appears a lightning bolt is to blame for a fire Wednesday evening at a radio tower site outside Kirksville.Right around 6:30 p.m., crews were called to a fire on Patterson Way a mile-and-a half east of Kirksville. When firefighters got there, smoke was billowing from the metal building that houses the transmitter for KTUF radio in Kirksville.Eastern Adair County Fire Chief James Snyder told KTVO the fire appears to have started where the transmission line comes off the tower and into the 20' X 20' building.

Snyder said neighbors reported hearing a clap of thunder and a lightning strike about 15 minutes before they noticed smoke coming from the transmitter building. The fire took KTUF radio off the air, and a deejay who answered the phone Wednesday evening said the station would likely remain off the air until repairs are made at the site.
