Fire claims life in Ottumwa

UPDATE: On Thursday afternoon, the Ottumwa Fire Department released the name of the man killed in Wednesday's motel-room fire.

Frederick Eaton, 48, of Ottumwa was found dead at the scene.

The cause of Eaton's death has yet to be announced by the State Medical Examiner's Office.

A small fire in an Ottumwa motel room claimed a man's life Wednesday morning.

The Ottumwa Fire Department responded to a call at the Royal Rest Motel just before 11 a.m. Upon arrival, fire officials found a male in his late 40s dead inside the room.

Investigators said the fire had burned out quickly due to lack of oxygen and was contained to one room.

The name of the victim has not been released until family members have been notified. The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

As for the fire, officials said they believe an improperly discarded cigarette caused the blaze. Investigators said, at this time, they do not suspect any foul play.
