Ottumwa firefighters battled a church fire early Friday morning.
Just before 6 a.m., the Southside station responded to a call about a lot of smoke near the Quincy Plaza in Ottumwa. When crews arrived at the scene, they found smoke coming from The First Church of God on 1404 Sherwood Drive off of Quincy. Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller said they noticed fire coming out of the west side of the building.
â??Firefighters arrived on scene,â?? Chief Miller said. â??They had to put a hole in the roof because there was a lot of gases in there and a lot of smoke in there. They ventilated the roof and extinguished it fairly quickly. After they extinguished the fire, they set up fans to get the smoke out of there, and it was a pretty good stop.â??
No one was in the church at the time of the blaze. Damages to the building are relatively minor. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and should be determined by Monday.
