Fire crews respond to overnight fire at La Plata Police station

Fire damage following a fire at the La Plata Police Department Monday morning.

Fire crews were called out Monday morning to reports of a fire at the La Plata Police Department.

According to La Plata Fire Chief, Bobby Couch, they received a call around 2:01 a.m. about a report of a fire at the police department. Both La Plata Fire and Atlanta Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene, and arrived 10 minutes after the call came in.

Crews were able to get the fire under control. Heavy smoke damage was reported at the police station and three nearby buildings.

No injuries were reported.

An investigator with the state Fire Marshal's office arrived on scene around 4:00 a.m.

"We're pretty sure it is arson. It's being investigated by our agency and the fire marshall as well," said La Plata Police Chief Jason Bunch. "We'll be going into City Hall at this time until we figure out if we're going to be able to go back into the actual Police Department or what the right avenue is from this point on."

Police have no suspects at this time.
