Fire forces mother, three children from their home

The fire happened Wednesday evening at 315 North Florence Street in Kirksville.

UPDATE: The cause of a Kirksville house fire remains under investigation.

The blaze was reported just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at 315 North Florence Street in Kirksville.

The rented home was occupied by Jody Howe Courtney and her three children.

They all made it out safely.

The home is owned by Clarence Roberts.

Captain James Snyder with the Kirksville Fire Department told KTVO that when crews arrived on the scene at the corner of Florence and Illinois, the structure was fully engulfed.

He says flames were coming out both the front and back doors.

Snyder says it appears the fire started in the kitchen.

An investigator from the Missouri State Fire Marshal's office was on the scene last night trying to figure out what caused the fire.

For now, the cause is undetermined and under investigation.

Kirksville firefighters were on the scene for six hours.

Although still standing, the home is considered a total loss.
