Crews from three fire departments battled a blaze in the timber behind a northeast Missouri home Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., a neighbor discovered the fire at 14747 Stahl Road about six miles northwest of Novinger, Missouri.

The natural cover fire happened at the Hook residence just down the road from the Shoemaker Conservation Area.

Firefighter Chris Drennan told KTVO the Hooks are truck drivers, and they are out of state right now.

He said it appears the fire spread from a fire pit located in the woods behind the Hook's mobile home.

It's unclear who started it.

Drennan said the flames, fanned by strong wind gusts, charred an estimated five acres.

The home was not damaged.

Crews from Adair County, Novinger and Green Castle fire departments battled the blaze with rakes, water backpacks and leaf blowers.

An Adair County sheriff's deputy was also on the scene talking with the property owner's daughter about the fire.
