Crews battle Ottumwa grass fire

Firefighters battle an Ottumwa grass fire Monday/KTVO

Wapello County firefighters battled a heavy grass fire Monday.

Just before noon, fire crews were called to the blaze on Keb Lane outside Ottumwa.

Ottumwa Deputy Fire Chief Cory Benge said the grass fire spread north, over roughly 20 acres of land.

He added that thick grass caused most of the heavy smoke.

The fire was under control within a half hour.

Benge expected the fire to stop spreading once it reached a plowed field, just north of where the fire started.

He was unsure of the cause at the scene on Monday.
