The First Pentecostal Church hosted its third annual backpack giveaway on Saturday.
The day kicked off with carnival games and activities going on in the church's parking lot as families came into register for the giveaway. Organizers had 550 backpacks filled with basic school supplies ready to hand out a little before noon. The event takes the first weekend of August each year, and the backpacks are purchased by the church thanks to donations.
"This is a very large outreach that our church hosts and we just want to help people in economic hard-times and give them a little help getting their kids back into school with backpacks that are filled with basic school supplies, and we also want to tell people that god loves them very much,â?? Lisa Mullikin, First Pentecostal Church Childrenâ??s Pastor, said.
Mullikin says they gave out over 400 backpacks last year, and they anticipated on handing out around 500 this year.
Any left over backpacks will be donated on a first-come, first-serve basis to people in the community who reach out to the church with the need.
