The Forest Lake Area Trail System took an exciting step Thursday afternoon, as members broke ground on a new trail at Thousand Hills State Park.
The four mile trail will eventaully connect the park with downtown Kirksville.
Committee member Dan Martin says the project offers many health benefits.
"Getting more people active, getting younger people maybe biking to the lake, getting some of the more elderly people out moving and coming out to the park and they might not have been here for a long time because they couldn't ride their bike or walk to the state park and this will open up those kind of doors for people who otherwise wouldn't use the park," Martin said.
The Kirksville high school band was also on hand to commemorate the ceremony
Committee members say they hope to complete the trail in the next few years.
FLATS was developed in 2009 to support the development of the trail, which has been in the planning stages since 1995.
