After taking a break last week for the holiday, a summer program is back this week to make sure local kids get a free lunch.
Since June 10, the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri has been holding the Food 4 Kids free summer lunch program in Brashear, P.C. Mills, Memorial, and Jaycee Parks in Kirksville.
Parents and children can come by Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and enjoy a well-balanced meal. Food 4 Kids organizers want to continue getting the word out so more kids and parents can come to the nearest park and eat their lunches and have some summer fun outside.
"It can be a struggle to feed kids 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. So we are hoping to help out families who are having a hard time doing that right now. We are hoping to fill a gap that is missing when they're out of school and not getting that lunch at school," said Program Manager Jessica Swiniarski. The Food 4 Kids summer program will be going on at all 4 Kirksville parks from now until August 2.
It was was created to help children who are on free and reduced-price lunches during the school year receive a nutritious meal when school is out for the summer.
