A number of local churches and businesses are in the process of collecting food for the summer months.
The food is being collected for the 'Food 4 Kids' summer program. 'Food 4 Kids' provides healthy food to kids ages five through 14. The kids will have the opportunity to eat a free lunch at one of the four parks in Kirksville during the summer time.
Lunches will be served for seven weeks during their summer break. The 'Food 4 Kids' program is also looking for volunteers to help pack the lunches. Last year, over three thousand lunches were served to local kids.
"Right now in Kirksville schools we have more than 50 percent of the kids who are enrolled that qualify for free and reduced lunches and so what happens in the summer when you don't have school is that those kids will not get the consistent necessary nutrition," said Rebecca Zimmer, 'Food 4 Kids' Coordinator.
'Food 4 Kids' is made possible with the help of these local organizations: The Food Bank for Central and North East Missouri, First United Methodist Church, Faith United Methodist Church, Grace Community Bible Church, First Presbyterian, Church of Christ, Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Hamilton Street Baptist Church, Trinity Episcopal, The Crossing, First Baptist, HY-VEE.
