Food Bank filling a need in Schuyler County
Lancaster, Mo. —
According to the United States Census Bureau, about 20 percent of resident in Schuyler County are considered impoverished. Without a grocery store nearby, the Food Bank of Schuyler County is helping fill this need.
"The need for food here is important," said Food Bank of Schuyler County volunteer Patricia Webster..
Volunteers at the Schuyler County Food Room have taken matters in their own hands.
"Today we're handing out food to the needy families around the county and surrounding counties," said Food Bank of Schuyler County Manager Patrick McGillan.
Open three times a month, cars begin lining up before the doors open.
When they get the call, about 13 volunteers in the warehouse gather orders, package food in boxes and roll the filled boxes down the line.
"Back here we don't get to see a lot of the people coming in, but that's OK. We know we're doing a good thing," Webster said.
"They want to help other people, and that's what our purpose is," McGillan said.
"On a given Friday and Monday together, we'll serve 200 families, approximately 540 people,” McGillan said.
In January, the food bank served over 20,000 pounds of food.
"You feel good about helping people," said McGillan
"It’s awesome. I get such a great feeling doing it," said Food Bank volunteer Rose Bunch.
"You're not going to leave here without food," said McGillan.
