Whether itâ??s on the field or on the court, keeping student athletes safe is a priority.
Northeast Regional Medical Center is helping to provide free physicals to some local student athletes. The physicals will take place at Kirksvilleâ??s William Matthew Middle School on Thursday, June 19, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Friday, June 20, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. No appointment is necessary. Teams of physicians will be present throughout the day examining athletes for anything that could pose a threat during sports this upcoming school year.
â??The physicals are important for two reasons,â?? Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Kevin Marberry said. â??First itâ??s a requirement by our state athletic association to be able to play sports. Second, weâ??re looking for conditions that would predispose to problems during athletic participation.â??
This is the fourth year for the event and Dr. Marberry says they are expecting a big turn-out.
â??The awareness is getting out there that these are important and weâ??re doing a very thorough job of screening athletes for potential problems.â??
