Fundraiser to help community rebuild
CENTERVILLE, Iowa —
Rathbun Lake YMCA in Centerville, Iowa is holding a shoe drive to raise funds for its building operations.
The YMCA is newly accredited, with a new outreach mission.
"When I moved back here about five years ago, I saw a big difference in the community. We lost industry and we lost about 2000 in population," said CEO Molly Revers .
With high operation costs, the Rathbun Lake YMCA is working with the organization “Funds to Org" to help raise money.
The shoes go to small businesses in developing countries for resale. 40 cents are earned for every pound of footwear donated.
One of the YMCA’s goal is to keep the building’s pool operations intact. Keeping the pool functioning is vital to the community as the Centerville High School swim team uses this pool for swim practice.
"It's a struggle to have enough finances to run the place having a heated pool, having programs that are affordable for all," Revers said.
The alternative place for swim practice is nearly 50-miles away in Ottumwa.
The final day of the shoe drive is Dec. 22. Revers said they want to collect 100 bags.
"Right now, we only have about 20 bags, so we've got a way to go before Dec. 22," Revers said.
Each of the 20 bags collected stores 25 pairs of shoes.
