Gospel Music Festival/Fundraiser
Mount Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission announces that six local gospel groups will perform at a Gospel Music Festival on Sunday, March 30 at 2 pm at the First Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant.
The groups that will be participating are Selah, the Tinders Group, Second Baptist Ministry, Bryan Katchay, Terry Hemsworth, and the John Hemsworth Family. The event is being organized by the Mount Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission as a fundraiser for repair of the roof of the historic Second Baptist Church, located at the corner of West Saunders and North Van Buren Streets.
The Second Baptist Church is the oldest standing building in the City of Mt. Pleasant, the oldest African American Church building in Iowa, and likely the oldest standing Methodist Church in Iowa. The original wood-frame building was constructed as a Methodist Church in 1843, and sold to the African American Church in 1863. Such an early structure with so rich a history is truly a historical treasure in Mt. Pleasant and reflects the cityâ??s proud heritage. The Historic Preservation Commission has submitted a nomination for the church to be added to the National Register of Historic Places and is currently making plans for the buildingâ??s renovation and repair so that it can be enjoyed by the community and visitors as a museum.
The event is open to the public and a free-will offering will be taken.
