Ground was broken Thursday afternoon in a hayfield, marking the next step for a brand new Adair County nursing home facility.

The future 45,000 square foot building will be built on the corner of Jamison and LaHarpe Streets, in the empty lot just behind the Adair County Family YMCA.

USDA Rural Development issued a $12 million loan for the facility.

It will be developed after a new concept of 'neighborhoods' for those in long term or rehabilitative care.

The blueprint includes spaces laid out like grocery stores, for more of a community feel.

The project has been in the planning stages for two years.

"We're now to the stage where we're seeing renderings of what our dream and our vision is going to look like, and turning over these pieces of dirt today was really symbolic for us of turning over new opportunities for the residents of Northeast Missouri, for residential care, for rehabilitation, and restorative care in what we plan to be the leading center in this area of Northeast Missouri,” said Elizabeth Clark, president of the Adair County Nursing Home Board of Directors.

Clark said this is the biggest project the Adair County Nursing Home District has ever done.

The estimated date when the building will be open is September of 2018.
