Group to give advice on Lee County's consolidation

A committee plans to turn in a recommendation soon to officials on whether Lee County should keep its unique distinction of two county seats.

The committee said Tuesday it will submit a recommendation to the Lee County Board of Supervisors during its July 22 meeting.

The committee is considering whether to advise the board to consolidate the county seats of Fort Madison and Keokuk. The group may also recommend other options, such as leaving everything as it is now.

The issue is a sensitive one for residents of Fort Madison and Keokuk. The Fort Madison Daily Democrat reports one committee member said the group has been accused of being biased in their research on the matter.
